Our Climate Change Progress and Actions to Date

East Devon District Council is committed to addressing climate change and building a sustainable future for our community. We've taken significant steps to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment, particularly with our in-house emissions and environmental impacts.

Below are some key actions and progress we've made in our ongoing climate change efforts:

  • 89 wildlife improvement sites are being actively managed to restore habitats and boost biodiversity across the district.
  • Almost 50% of our Streetscene fleet now consists of electric vehicles (EVs), cutting emissions from our transport operations.
  • Public EV chargers have been installed in 14 car parks, with another 14 planned by 2026.
  • Energy-intensive security lights are being replaced with efficient LED lighting, expected to reduce running costs by 81%.
  • In 2024, 2,500 trees were planted across East Devon to enhance green spaces and absorb carbon.
  • Over 400 social housing properties have received energy efficiency upgrades, helping reduce household energy bills and carbon emissions.
  • Seaton Wetlands welcomed over 112,000 visitors in 2024, a 12% increase from the previous year, helping connect more people with nature.
  • The East Devon Carbon Action Programme has:
    • Provided one-to-one support to 18 businesses and community organisations
    • Delivered training to 72 individuals
    • Funded 50 in-depth Carbon Surveys and Carbon Reduction Plans, supporting 26 businesses and 24 community organisations
