East Devon District Council is pleased to support Clean Air Night on the evening of Wednesday 22 January 2025.
The event aims to raise awareness about the impact of indoor air pollution, particularly from stoves and open fires, and to encourage individuals to make informed choices for a healthier home environment.
Burning solid fuels is a significant source of pollution, as microscopic particles can easily be inhaled and enter the bloodstream, potentially causing serious health problems. Long-term exposure can increase the risk of heart and lung disease, diabetes and dementia. It can also aggravate existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma.
While East Devon District Council monitors air quality and pollution levels in the area are low, this Clean Air Night we are encouraging everyone who uses stoves or open fires to consider ways to improve both indoor and outdoor air quality.
Making small changes to how you burn fuel in your stove or open fire can have significant benefits for your health and the environment, including:
- Improved air quality – By reducing the harmful pollutants released inside and outside, you can breathe easier and contribute to better local air quality.
- Increased safety – Proper burning reduces the risk of chimney fires and ensures that your stove or fire is working as it should, protecting you from hazards.
- Better efficiency – A well-maintained appliance burns less fuel to produce more heat, saving you money while improving comfort in your home.
If you rely on a stove or open fire for heating, it's essential to burn safely and use the correct fuel. Remember these top tips for safe and efficient burning:
- Get your stove or open fire inspected and serviced at least once a year by a qualified professional to ensure it is in good working order.
- Always use your appliance according to the manufacturer's instructions and only burn suitable fuels.
- Get your chimney swept at least once a year to prevent dangerous build-ups of soot and tar, which can lead to chimney fires.
- Minimise smoke and pollution by burning only dry wood or certified manufactured solid fuels that carry the ‘Ready to Burn’ logo.
