Burning water leaks
What is scalding?
Scalding happens when water is too hot and burns the skin. It can happen quickly, especially to children, older people, or those with disabilities.
Safe water temperatures
- Hot water should be below 44°C at taps and showers.
- Water hotter than this can cause burns in seconds.
How to stay safe
- Use thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) to control water temperature.
- Make sure taps and showers are easy to use and not damaged.
- Check that hot water pipes are covered or insulated.
Who is most at risk?
- Children – thinner skin burns faster.
- Older adults – slower reactions and sensitive skin.
- People with disabilities – may not feel heat properly or react quickly.
Good Practice
- Test water temperature regularly.
- Report any problems with hot water systems quickly so they can be rectified.
