The Handy Person Service
1. What is it?
This service sends a skilled worker from?Ian Williams Ltd?to help with small repairs or improvements in your home for free. These are jobs the council doesn’t normally do.
Remember, you need to provide the materials for the job. The handyperson will only bring their tools.
2. Who can use it?
You can use this service if you live in sheltered housing, don’t have family or friends nearby who can help, are over 70 or have a disability?and?get one of these benefits:
- Attendance Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Personal Independence Payments
- Incapacity Benefit
- Mobility Allowance
- War Disablement Allowance
- Industrial Injuries Benefit
- Income Support, including the disability premium
3. What kind of jobs can be done?
The handy person can help with small jobs like:
- Changing light bulbs or re-fixing plugs
- Bleeding radiators
- Draught-proofing
- Small fence repairs
- Minor plumbing jobs (like connecting a washing machine)
- Putting up shelves, curtain poles, or pictures
- Building small flat-pack furniture
- We will fit toilet seats, but we won’t supply them to you
4. What jobs are?not?included?
- Decorating
- Gardening or planting
- Big or complicated plumbing or electrical work
5. How do I use the service?
First, you need to?register?by calling the repairs team on?01395 517458?or emailing?repairs@eastdevon.gov.uk.
Once you’re registered, you can ask for help during office hours. You can get up to?three 1-hour visits?each year. You can use them all at once or at different times.
