1. How it works

Imagine having your own place, but with a friendly helping hand nearby if you need it. That's what sheltered housing is like for people over 55 who need a bit of support with their home. It helps them to live by themselves for longer.

  • Your own home:?You get your own flat or bungalow with a kitchen, bathroom, and living areas – nobody shares your space.
  • Emergency help:?Each home has a special alarm that can be used to call for help at any time, day or night, monitored by the council’s inhouse Home Safeguard team
  • Friendly support:?We have a team of helpers called Mobile Support Officers (MSOs). They visit regularly to see how you're doing, check if everything is safe, and offer help with things related to your home.
  • Keeping your independence:?The main goal is to help you stay as independent as possible in your own home, knowing that someone is there if you need them.
  • Finding other help:?We don't provide personal care like help with washing or dressing, but we can help you find other services you might need and show you how to apply for them.
  • Making friends:?Some places have shared rooms or community areas where people can meet, chat, and do activities together, which is a great way to be part of a community.
  • How to apply:?If you're interested in sheltered housing in East Devon, you need to apply through?Devon Home Choice. You'll need to meet the same criteria as when applying for other council housing. Additionally, you'll have to be over 55 years old and have a need for support.

2. Contact your Mobile Support Officer

Our MSOs work in small teams based in different district offices. Each team has 4 people who help in one area. You’ll be connected to the team that works in your area, and over time, you’ll get to know them well. When they visit you, they’ll explain everything in more detail.
