InformationCommunity Led Housing

Community-led housing is an overarching term for housing that is owned or managed by the
community on a not-for-profit basis. Community-led housing developments are generally
generated and established by groups of people living or working in the local area. Projects
should be run via a democratic process incorporating strong community participation.  They may take any one of various legal forms including a co-operative society, community benefit society, company limited by guarantee.

A Community Land Trust (CLT) is a community-led, not-for-profit, organisation that provides land and buildings to meet the long term needs of it's community.  It offers a way to provide permanently affordable housing, and holds these assets in trust, so the community benefits forever.

There are several CLTs in East Devon - Corry Valley (Dalwood), Upper Coly Valley (Northleigh, Southleigh and Farway); Gittisham, Beer, Colyton & Colyford; Wilmington, Yarcombe, Broadhembury, and Brampford Speke, Upton Pyne & Cowley.

The National CLT Network provides resources and advice on getting started and Middlemarch Community Led Housing CIC offer technical support.
