What happens next?
We are currently reviewing all feedback received and using it to inform our understanding for the next two investigations.

Our first investigation will look at a situation of what would happen to the beach and cliffs if we did no management to the area over the next 100 years. This will help us better understand the long-term risk. We will use your feedback in this assessment. This work will ensure that local evidence and community perspectives are fully reflected.

Our second investigation will look at options to reduce risk. This is known as options appraisal. This will include another round of engagement, likely in late spring or early summer. We appreciate that some people were not fully able to participate in the last round of engagement due to the tragic events on Christmas Day. We hope this second round of engagement will provide an opportunity to do this. Further details will be shared once plans are confirmed.

Project aims

The aim of the project is to produce a new Beach & Cliff Management Plan for Budleigh Salterton, with consideration of the wider sediment system within which the management plan area is situated and in line with good practice as set out in the Beach Management Manual second edition (CIRIA, 2010) & Cliff Instability and Erosion Management in Great Britain: A Good Practice Guide (Halcrow, 2011).

This will need to balance legal, environmental, social, technical and economic considerations to ensure that the management plan produced is the key document guiding the management of coastal flood and erosion risk along the Budleigh Salterton frontage in a sustainable, integrated way that also acknowledges the internationally designated environmental interests of the area.

It is unlikely that the management plan will identify solutions that stop coastal erosion along the full length of the management plan area, so as part of developing the plan options for adaptation of parts of the area will need to be developed if options available will only slow the rate of erosion at most.

The project email is budleighsaltertonbcmp@eastdevon.gov.uk if you have any questions on the plan please email them to the project email.
