InformationEast Devon New settlement

Thank you to everyone who took time to share their views with us about two options for a new community in East Devon - at a public consultation event on 16 September and through an online survey.

As part of our new Local Plan, a new community will be needed to provide homes for local people. The new community will create around 8,000 homes and employment and be home to a wide range of facilities, from schools and shops to parks and playing pitches.

We will review all of the responses to the consultation. If you have any queries, please contact new-town@eastdevon.gov.uk and stay updated by visiting the consultation homepage Community Forum - East Devon New Settlement - Commonplace.

Update 1.0

Thanks to everyone who contributed to a review of proposals for East Devon’s newest town last year.  The masterplan is currently being revised in response to feedback received. The updated masterplan will be available for public consultation in May 2025 as part of an additional consultation for the new Local Plan.

East Devon District Council’s new Local Plan identifies that a second new town will be required to meet housing need in East Devon. The new town will create a self-sufficient, healthy and dynamic community with at least 8,000 homes, alongside employment space and community facilities, with a rich and biodiverse network of linking green spaces. The town will be home to a wide range of facilities, from schools, doctors and shops to parks and playing pitches, along with transport and sewage infrastructure improvements.

The Local Plan identifies an area south of Exeter Airport and the A30 and north of the A3052 as the preferred location for the new community, which was approved by EDDC Councillors in December 2023,  Strategic Planning Committee, 05/12/2023, Item 7.
